With winter in full swing, the team at Never Summer is getting excited for the 2022-2023 snowboarding season. Besides obvious basics like getting your snowboard tuned, you should also consider other ways to maximize your fun this season.
If you have ever spent time at a ski area like Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, there is no doubt that you have seen people tailgating. For many people, having a decked-out tailgate setup is a great way to party with friends and celebrate the winter season.
Beyond the obvious fun that comes with hanging out in the parking lot of your favorite ski area, a well-stocked tailgate kit can also keep your snowboard performing its best at all times.
Chairs & Seating
No matter what type of vehicle you drive to the mountain, seating options should be one of your first considerations. Not only does seating give you a place to chill when taking a break, but it also provides a place to change into your boots at the beginning and end of each day.
While pick-up trucks and hatchbacks offer obvious seating in the back, many people don’t realize that hatches and bumpers get covered with snow and slush on the highway. A pro tip is to lay a blanket over your tailgate or back bumper before sitting down.
If you drive a car, simply throw a few folding camp chairs in the trunk for the entire winter. That way, they are always there when you need them!
Back-Up Gear & Equipment
While many people think that tailgating is all about festivities, you can also pack your kit with practical tools for your snowboard setup.
Keeping spare clothing and gear available in your car can be crucial in certain situations. If your gloves become wet, a dry pair can literally save the day. Similarly, having extra layers and new lenses for your goggles in changing conditions can make all the difference.
Some riders also keep a backup snowboard in their car. Whether it be due to equipment damage or quickly changing weather conditions, being able to quickly switch out your snowboard can be a real game changer.
Meals, Snacks & Drinks
Ask any college or professional sports fan - no true tailgating setup would be complete without food and beverages on hand.
A well-stocked cooler is essential for tailgating. While we all enjoy some hot cocoa to warm up after a day of thrashing the powder, be sure to balance out your cocoa stash with beverages like water and soda. Some people also like to have coffee, or tea waiting in a warm thermos on a cold winter day.
When it comes to food, you can do anything from simple items like sandwiches, chips, and granola bars to more elaborate hot meals. To really bring the tailgating spirit, you can grill burgers and brats, or heat up some tasty soup on a stove.
Tools for Your Snowboard Setup
You are also well-advised to keep snowboard tune-up tools on hand in your car.
No matter how experienced a rider you might be, you can’t perform at your best if your snowboarding setup up-to-speed. Having a basic multi-tool available will ensure you can tighten down loose gear as necessary, or make adjustments to the angles of your bindings.
For many of us, a quick snowboard tune-up can make all the difference. Bringing an edge file allows you to grind the edges of your snowboard and keep them sharp at all times - a practice that is particularly helpful on hard-pack snow and ice.
Fun Extras to Bring the Party
If you really want to go big on winter tailgating this season, there are a few more times you can include to bring things to the next level. Additional items for over-the-top winter tailgating include:
- Portable fire pit
- Easy up canopy (never put a lit fire pit underneath the easy up canopy)
- Tuning kit and table
- Propane space heater
- Games (ladder ball and cornhole) if your parking lot isn’t busy!
Whether you enjoy good food, loud music, or a high-performing snowboarding setup, you can make winter tailgating whatever you want.
