What is a splitboard? It’s a type of snowboard that was introduced to help backcountry borders expend less energy, travel more efficiently and “ get further out into the backcountry” than hiking or using snowshoes. It also keeps the board “off your back.” Essentially, it’s a snowboard that splits into two skis. While you’re trekking up to the top of your line, the skis in conjunction with climbing skins allow you to glide using a free heel motion upslope without sliding backwards. The skis also keep you ontop of deep powder compared to ‘“post-holing'' or hiking in knee-deep powder.. Using a splitboard is also much faster and more energy efficient than using snowshoes. Once you’re at the top, the “skis” clip back together with specifically designed industrial clips and binding mounting system, so you can ride down like you would on any regular snowboard.
