Not much to say. The board speaks for itself. Every day last season I wanted to ride this board, and was excited and pleased every time I did.
I’m 5’10”, 190 lbs., and I bought the 160 Proto FR this season. Rode it 18 days from ice to slush and from groomed to knee deep powder. Sometime my bindings were forward for a centered feel where I could lay it flat on toe and heel edges. On powder days I moved the bindings back and floated with ease and could carve open radiuses to tight tree turns. Absolutely zero complaints. I’ve snowboarded since the late 1980s, and I’ve never loved a board so much. Full disclosure: I do not ride terrain parks. I ride mostly resorts looking for the hidden stashes in the trees or carving the bowls. I prefer a stiff board with edge control. This board really shined when the fresh powder was ridden out and the runs were choppy sections of chunder . The Proto FR steadily sliced through without chatter or slipping out.
There are a ton of choices out there, and it can be overwhelming to pick a new board. You can rest assured that this board will not disappoint you. (My 2 cents). Plus NS builds bombproof boards that will last for many seasons. Thanks NS!
I am 6'4", 210lbs, size 11 boots size 12 foot size and I bought and rode the Proto Tripple Camber FR 162 DF. The stability of this board over variable late season conditions gave me so much confidence. It feels locked in like traditional camber but it isnt catchy feeling or overly stiff. It was surprisingly forgiving. I was able to lay over and reverse carve almost immediately and the lenght was perfect for me. Quick edge to edge in tight spots and had good float in powder. This board checks all the boxes for an all mountain free ride and I would highly reccomend it to anyone looking for a go anywhere do anything kind of board.
I've spent the past several years on a Heritage (still going strong), and the Legacy for many years before that (finally killed my most recent one after about 7 seasons, which was my rock board), so these are what I use for comparison. There doesn't seem to be a board in the lineup to replace the Heritage, I thought this might be it but it's a whole different animal. I ride a lot (around 75 resort days in Tahoe per year), harder than most, all over the mountain, I've put about 12-15 days on this board in the past three weeks in every condition and situation - bottomless powder, spring corn and slush, steeps, groomers, cliff and cornice drops, and some jumps. This board holds an edge and locks into carves like no other board I've been on. But the Heritage and Legacy both do everything else better - more nimble in tight spots, easier to spin, floats better in pow, and way more forgiving at high speeds in bumps and chunder, like I'm one with the board. The Proto FR feels way too stiff (and I weigh 215), I can get it to do what I want but have to fight it a bit. I tried to love this board, it's fun for high speed buff groomers or big open pow fields, but for my daily driver I'll be sticking with the Heritage most of the time. I do think a softer Proto FR could make a pretty nice split.
I purchased the FR back in January and waited to review until fully vetted. I love that NS is built is in the US! I had Q's prior to order, called the NS number and talked to a real expert, the next day I ordered my board. The ride experience on the FR is puzzling. It rides a whole lot like a camber board but with some of the looseness of a rocker hybrid. It grips hard stuff well. I like the stiff and damp combo especially for when the hill deteriorates at the end of the day. It 1-foots really well for off the chair and on the flats. I enjoy the overall ride.
