She's stable, carves on ice, floats in pow, and can stomp any trick. Feels more similar to a camber board with the pop of a park board.
I’ve been snowboarding off and on for 20 years. I consider myself an intermediate rider at best, as I typically only get 4-5 days a year on the board. At 50 years old, I mostly ride groomers, not a park rat, but I am working on riding switch and hitting some small features. At 6’1” and overweight at 210 lbs., I prefer a board with a stiff flex. I’ve always rode boards with a traditional single camber, so I was a little concerned switching to a triple camber. I also wear a 10.5 boot, so I wasn’t sure how getting edge to edge was going to feel on a mid-wide board.
Any new board takes a little getting used to and it was no different with the 2023 Proto Ultra (160). By the end of the first day, I felt comfortable and considering that I also had brand new boots and bindings (Burton Step On), that’s saying something. After spending 10 days on the board, I can say I am very happy with the board. The triple camber feels very close to a traditional single camber but is more forgiving if you get sideways. It feels very stable a speed. I hit a new top speed, at 36 mph, on this board. Not too shabby for an old fat guy. Getting edge to edge? No problem feels very natural. Lastly, the top sheet is very grippy. I don’t need a stomp pad anymore.
This board is phenomenal at carving! I went from a flat-pop rocker snowboard to this wacky three camber profile board. It is a game changer!
Great all mtn. Board. Incredibly stable. I have ridden everything on this board and am completely amazed at how versatile it is. Great board if you ride everything.
So let's just get it out there. NS has been making the best boards on the planet for over 20 years. The durability and ride makes them stand out above the rest. They have great customer service and always make sure you are happy. The ultra is "so choice, if you have the means I highly recommend you picking one up", even Bueller agrees!
I bought the proto FR and it was a bit stiff for my riding style (mostly pow, trees and jibs). I contacted the boys at the factory and they were totally cool with me coming in and demoing some boards to find the right fit. Which is unheard of in the snowboarding world. After riding the Ultra I knew it was love within about two turns. This board friggin rules!! It's the shortest board I have ridden in the 25 years since I started riding and holds an edge at speed with no worries. It's also a little wider so it rips in pow, even given it's length (just finished two days at the boat where it was balls deep in spots). The Ultra is basically the quiver killer and best all mountain twin I have ever ridden. Keep up the great work NS!
